We have heard from many of our educational partners the urgent need to address schools shutting down and to put courses online with video as quickly as possible due to COVID-19. If you were an educator, what would you do?
Teachers are scrappy. They do whatever it takes to make sure their students are learning. Educators are natural entrepreneurs – they know how to do a lot with a little. However – one skill that takes some practice, is creating educational content and translating that into video format.
Video and live online video is a new medium. It’s wonderful when it works – but not always easy to pull off. However – I’ve been blown away about who and how educators have been able to use video to help them in their classroom.
Last year – we taught a media skills workshop to instructors at Antelope Valley Unified School District – and I was so impressed by the engagement among the teachers that we had in the room. This year – we opened up the media education workshop to all teachers – not just media instructors. And it was a big hit.
We had math teachers who had been teaching for years, who were teaching tutorials in video format because their students demanded it. They stopped caring about the way their hair looked or their voice sounded, and just started teaching. Because that’s what teachers do.
We had instructors from the dental school who were using their phones to demonstrate best practices for different dental procedures – and it was wonderful to watch their creativity soar when it came to new ideas and new ways they could think of to create content to show new skills.
We’ve also worked with schools directly to help them make their own video courses and lessons, or help them along the way as writers, producers, editors, and creative minds and hands.
